Hi all,

Just wanted to give a quick heads up, that starting next month, this newsletter will be changing from weekly to monthly. As we are settling in to our space more and have a well established weekly schedule, there is less news to share each week, so I don't want to get lost in the email shuffle by just sending out the schedule every week (which many of you know by heart) just to keep up the pattern. This will also give more time to create a more useful and interesting newsletter, that might include tips and tricks, tool highlights, member submitted projects (hint hint) and more. There might be a little adjustment to find the right schedule, and we'll definitely send out separate updates about things like schedule changes and special events, but overall, you can look forward to less frequent, but more interesting emails from us in the future!

Another reminder that we're still looking for a few more people to help out in the space during Eastworks Open Studio, especially on Sunday. Come hang out for a bit and share your excitement for what we're doing. And if you have something you've made that you'd like to put on display for the event, let us know! Sign up here for a shift or two and help us show off our great little makerspace.

And don't forget, after we finish up on Saturday, we're planning to head over to New City Brewery from 6-9 for an informal "3 years of MakeFixHack" hangout for everyone who's been helping us out, wishing us well, or just talking and tinkering along the way. Basically if you're reading this, you're welcome to join us! There's also a spot on the open studio signup sheet to let us know if you're interested (even if you can't help out during the day). This coming Monday is the last Costume Clinic themed Mending Monday, so if you have some last minute fixes or additions, this is a great time and place to get them done. You're also welcome to bring your costume or other project in for more work during our other open sessions too, in case you want more time to work on it. Of course, Mending Monday will continue on with it's alternate week schedule after Halloween too, in case you need to make any post trick or treat repairs.

How is it October already? I could have sworn there was still one more week left of September. Anyway, it is definitively fall now, and Halloween is less than a month away. Lucky for you, this Monday is another Mending Monday Costume Clinic! So bring out your costume (or any other fiber arts related item) for some stitching, fixing, modifying and mending. You're also welcome to come out to our free Talk & Tinker Tuesdays and open hours (with a membership or small donation) to have some more work time on whatever your project is.

Also, we're only a month away from Eastworks Open Studio Weekend (Nov 1st & 2nd, 10-5) and we'd love you have you there to help us meet and greet our local community. There will be a signup sheet soon so we can be sure we can keep the doors open the whole weekend. Plus, Talk & Tinker Tuesday is also a great time to come by to work on any technological parts of your costume, decoration, or completely unrelated project too! We have LEDs in all sorts of colors, battery holders, motors, etc, and I'll be there to help a bit with ideas and (some) electronics knowledge.
October is fast approaching, and so is the 3 year mark for this adventure known as MakeFixHack. Details are still being worked out, but we're planning to have a little get together/celebration for our members, volunteers, and long term supporters, so keep an eye on the newsletter for the announcement.

Also coming up this fall, we'll be participating in Eastworks Open Studios on November 1st and 2nd. It's a great opportunity to introduce our space to the community, but we're going to need your help! Whether you're one of our earliest members or just recently started coming to one of our open sessions, you can help us share what makes our space special. Signups coming soon.

Hi all!

In our ongoing quest to help our members make even more cool things, we have added another piece of equipment to our inventory! We now have a Heat Press to go along with the vinyl cutter (as well as other projects where things need to be made hot and flat). As with our other equipment, this will be available for our members to use during our open sessions and member hours.

Space Updates

We've been hard at work rearranging some things in the space based on some feedback and experience working on a variety of projects. The first step has been moving the 3d printers into "the vault" (the purple box) with the xTool S1 laser cutter, Cricut Maker vinyl cutter, a scanner/printer able to handle up to 11"x17" paper, and a laptop with the software to talk to all the equipment. This way, these devices are ready to go so our members can be printing or cutting in minutes, while also freeing up more potential workspace in the main room. The next step will be to reorganize our shelves a bit to make our tools and supplies more obvious and accessible.

Hi all!

Last weekend was an intense 3 days of amazing talks, interesting workshops, and more hacker minds per square mile than nearly anywhere else. From dealing with data brokers to designing neuro-inclusive spaces, Meshtastic nodes to Mars simulations, decentralized technology to bureaucracy hacking, and so much more. As soon as they're posted by the con organizers, I'll definitely be sharing links to videos of the talks, and I learned about some great resources and workshop ideas that we'll definitely be putting to use at MFH in the near future.

tl;dr: Space Updates, Maker Tip: Superglue+Baking Soda, Upcoming Schedule

Hi all!

We had a great turnout at this weeks Talk & Tinker Tuesday, with a visitor from Worcester's Technocopia Makerspace stopping by to say hi, in depth repair of a guests 3d printer, some exciting woodworking, and lots more!
We've also been seeing some fun projects being made on our laser cutter during member hours too! If you're a member and curious about how the laser cutter works, there's an easy tutorial you can try next time you're in the space that covers the basics.

Things are beginning to shift around in the space as we continue to learn how it's being used and what our members need and want. The space where the CNC once was is in the process of becoming a design lab, to make tools like the Cricuit vinyl cutter, 3d printers, and the laser cutter easier to access and use. If there's ever anything you're looking for and can't find, feel free to ask!

As I've been looking through the "archives" to refresh my memory of how this all started, I came across this tip from an early newsletter, so I thought I'd share it again, as it's something I still regularly use:

Maker Tip

Use a sprinkle of baking soda to quickly set superglue when you're making a repair.
I've found that in some situations (on certian plastics, for example) super glue does not set nearly fast enough, especially when I'm trying to attach a rather precarious piece that keeps tipping over. Sprinkling some baking soda on the glue will cause it to set nearly instantly for a small repair, and larger repairs can be built up layer by layer. It will make a cloudy white repair rather than clear, so be aware of that in case the fix will be visible. As with most glues, make sure you have good ventalation and adequate safety gear for the level of work you're doing. As a bonus, here's a fun video of Adam Savage talking all about superglue.

tl;dr: Ethical Hacking workshop next week, upcoming schedule

Hi All!

Not sure where this summer is going in such a hurry, but it's August already! And speaking of time going by, we're coming up on 3 years since I started this wild project! I'll have to work on some "historic" notes for upcoming newsletters to share some of the story.

Space Updates

Two additions and one subtraction to our space. Thanks to our neighbors down the hall at Prodigy Mini Golf, we now have an air conditioner, which has kept things a lot more comfortable for this past week.

Also, one of our members has provided us with a nice, big TV that is now mounted up on the wall to use for showing visuals at workshops, sharing video tutorials during open hours, background for slow hours, member movie nights (send me your suggestions for Making/Fixing/Hacking themed movies!), and more!

We've also made the choice to say goodbye to the CNC router that was on loan from one of our board members. It was a great machine, but we found it didn't fit well in the current small space we have and it got minimal use due to concerns about noise, dust, and training. We really did appeciate the opportunity to try it out though, and it has taught us a lot about what to look for and expect in the future, when we will be able to accomodate larger woodworking equipment. Not to worry though, this change makes room for more exciting possibilities in the near future!

Hi all!

Our first Ethical Hacking for Beginners workshop was packed! We set up virtual machines and learned about different way to probe for security issues using a "capture the flag" style game. For those who couldn't make it and those who want to further sharpen their skills, be on the lookout: we plan to offer this again!
