tl;dr: Next Talk & Tinker meetup 12/12 @ River Valley Co-op with home made instruments, get involved with MakeFixHack

Hi all!

Our next Talk & Tinker meetup is Tuesday 12/12 at the Easthampton River Valley Co-op from 6-9 pm. This time we’re having a special theme of home-made/repaired/hacked musical instruments. So if you have an instrument you made, whether from a kit, from scratch, or repurposed junk, bring it along. Acoustic, wind, percussion, noise, electric, or whatever, we want to see it (within reason, of course. Pipe organs, fire trumpets, and such won’t fit in the space, unfortunately). I’ll be bringing a kit-made mountain dulcimer, a scrap wood marimba, my weird stepper motor noise machine, and a few other musical gadgets. Got something broken you want to try to fix? Bring it along. Just want to come and see what’s going on? That’s cool too!

Maker Tip of the week

Cardboard Aided Design - If you’re working on a project that involves creating any sort of structure, container, or housing, or even simple mechanisms like hinges and latches, mocking it up with cardboard can be a big help. It can let you identify fit issues, help refine the design, and save materials.

Do you have an idea or a request for a future Talk & Tinker theme or maker tip? Is there something you know about and want to share, or something that you would like to learn more about? Let us know and we can set something up. If you’re interested in helping bring MakeFixHack to life, there are many ways to get involved. We can always use help with things like social media, designing and putting up flyers, and other forms of outreach. And if you or someone you know happens to have experience with things like forming a non-profit, organizational structures, or anything else you think might be helpful, please let us know.

If you want to get in touch with other local makers, hackers, crafty people, and other just generally interesting people, join us on Discord at https://discord.gg/ZWh8gnwB. It’s a server set up by one of our members for all sorts of local topics: from bikes and native plants, to local events and community concerns. Plus repair, freecycle, tool exchange, and other "maker" topics as well. If you join, please make a quick post in introductions to help everyone get to know you.

Be well and keep making things!
