tl;dr: Next Meetup 1/23 @ New City Brewery, upcoming Talk & Tinker themes, HOPE conference

Hi all!

Our next meetup will be on Tuesday 1/23 from 6-8 pm at New City Brewery. We’ll be chatting about current/planned projects, upcoming events, and working on the future of MakeFixHack. Come on by for a tasty beverage and some good maker conversations.

As we mentioned in the last newsletter, the theme for the next Talk & Tinker Tuesday (1/30 @ River Valley Co-op) will be Home-Made Musical Instruments! Cigar-box guitars, kit made folk instruments and electronic synthesizers, hacked together noise makers, and anything else you’ve made, fixed, or modified. And if you haven’t made anything but want to see what others came up with, come along and get some ideas. As with every Talk & Tinker, everyone is welcome and you can bring along whatever project you’d like, though this one might be a bit noisier. Then, two weeks after that on 2/13, we’ll be getting hands on with some locksport/lock picking fun. If you have an idea or a request for a theme, just let me know and we’ll set something up!

One of the biggest influences on my decision to start MakeFixHack are the experiences I’ve had attending the Hackers On Planet Earth conference that happens every 2 years in NYC, and it’s coming up again this July 12-14. It’s a great event with talks and workshops presented by people from all walks of life and all over the world, and keynotes from authors, whistleblowers, activists, and more. Unique musical performances, capture-the-flag events, film screenings, hardware hacking areas, and more. It’s family friendly, accessible, and very welcoming regardless of your tech knowledge, experience level, or whether or not you consider yourself a "hacker". I’m not at all associated with the event or the organizers, but I highly recommend everyone take a look at https://hope.net/about.html to learn more. I’ve also posted a bit more about my experiences there over at https://makefixhack.org.

If you want to get in touch with other makers/hackers/tinkerers, coordinate getting to events like HOPE, discuss repairs, sewing, native plants, or nearly anything else you can think of, join us on Discord with this invite https://discord.gg/4Cd2r38y. Just remember to say a quick ‘hi’ in the introductions channel when you join to help everyone get to know each other.

Be safe and keep making things!
