tl;dr: Next meetup is 11/21 @ New City Brewery, upcoming schedule, Maker Tip

Hi all!

First off, our next meetup will be at New City Brewery from 6-9 on Tuesday 11/21. Then we’re back to alternating weeks at River Valley Co-op on 11/28 and 12/12 for Talk & Tinker sessions, and planning/social meetups at New City on 12/5 & 12/19.

Just as a reminder, we have plenty of table/workspace at the co-op for our Talk & Tinker nights, so you’re welcome to bring along nearly any project or repair you can safely carry into a public space, but space is limited and power is unavailable at the brewery, so we’re not able to do much hands-on work there (beyond maybe measuring/fit testing small parts, laptop-based projects, and such). Also, while you’ll have no trouble finding food at the co-op, New City Brewery only serves drinks, but they do welcome you to bring food along or grab some nearby takeout. And we always have plenty to talk about regardless of venue, so feel free to join us any time.

Maker Tip of the Week

This week’s tip was suggested in our Maker channel on Discord - Using a sprinkle of baking soda to quickly set superglue when you’re makin a repair. I’ve found that in certian situations (on certian plastics, for example) super glue does not set nearly fast enough, especially when I’m trying to attach a rather precarious piece that keeps tipping over. Sprinkling some baking soda on the glue will cause it to set nearly instantly for a small repair, and larger repairs can be built up layer by layer. It will make a cloudy white repair rather than clear, so be aware of that result. As with most glues, make sure you have good ventalation and adequate safety gear for the level of work you’re doing. As a bonus, here’s a fun video I found by Adam Savage, talking all about superglue.

If you have maker/craft/repair tips you’d like to share, need help with a project, or just want to get in touch with other local makers, hackers, crafty people, and other just generally interesting people, join us on Discord at https://discord.gg/HwYPp9ba. It’s a server set up by one of our members for all sorts of local topics: from bikes and native plants, to local events and community concerns. Plus repair, freecycle, tool exchange, and other "maker" topics as well. If you join, please make a quick post in introductions to help everyone get to know you.

Be well and keep making things!
